Named after the poetess Sappho, often referred to as the tenth muse by Plato, Sapfo Extra Virgin Olive Oil is a unique product meticulously collected from the mountains and dry areas of Mytilene (Lesvos). The name is a tribute to the birthplace of Sappho, symbolizing the deep connection between the product and its roots.
The unique properties of Sapfo lie not only in its quality but also in its packaging. Each bottle is wrapped in a hand-knitted net, unique to every bottle. This design element is a semantic nod to the care and beautifying techniques that women in ancient times used for their hair, highlighting the attention to detail and quality that goes into the collection of the olive oil.
The design inspiration extends to the tag of the bottle, which is shaped after ancient pottery pieces. The interaction with the product is further enhanced through the matte painting of the glass and the colors carefully selected to reflect the dark olive itself and the golden flow of the olive oil. The entire concept is rooted in this interaction with nature.
The design process, which started in September 2016 in Athens and concluded in March 2017, involved a detailed brief based on a meeting with the producer, a small family company in Lesvos island. The research was rooted in the history of the island and its heritage. The final design was presented after a detailed product and market survey, analysis, and mockups to ensure the unique characteristics of the product.
The challenge lay in connecting a historical personality with a local product with simplicity and clarity. The result, however, was a design that was awarded Silver in A' Packaging Design Award in 2017. The award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation.
In conclusion, Sapfo Extra Virgin Olive Oil is more than a product; it's a blend of history, culture, and innovation. The design, inspired by the poetess Sappho, the hand-knitted net, and the tag shaped after ancient pottery pieces, all contribute to a unique packaging experience that sets Sapfo apart in the market.
